How Many Bags of Concrete Do You Actually Need

I built the concrete bag calculator on this site because most bag-count tools spit out a total and leave the hard parts unspoken — the inch-to-foot conversion that throws the volume off by a factor of twelve, and the point where keeping the mixer running stops making sense. This guide is the same math, written out so you can check it by hand before you buy a pallet.

The math, worked through

A 10×10 ft slab, poured 4 inches thick, needs:

10 × 10 × (4 ÷ 12) = 33.3 cubic feet

That’s the number that trips people up first — thickness has to be converted from inches to feet before you multiply, and skipping that step is the single most common estimating mistake on a slab pour. Get it wrong and you’re off by a factor of 12, not a rounding error.

From there, bag count depends on which size you’re buying. Quikrete publishes the yield for each bag size on its product data sheet (Concrete Mix No. 1101):

For the 33.3 cubic foot slab above, that’s roughly 56 bags of 80 lb mix (33.3 ÷ 0.60 = 55.5, rounded up), before adding waste for spillage and an uneven sub-base. With the usual 10% overage that becomes about 36.7 ft³ — closer to 62 × 80 lb bags — which is why the calculator shows both the net volume and the waste-adjusted shopping count.

Sakrete’s high-strength mix data sheet lists the same three yields for 40, 60, and 80 lb bags. That agreement is why those sizes are on the tool. Where brands disagree — notably some 90 lb bags — we leave the size out rather than invent a blended number.

When bagging stops making sense

I put a planning threshold on the calculator for the same reason I wrote this section: every bag tool will cheerfully count you past a hundred bags, and almost none of them say when to stop and price a truck. One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, which works out to roughly 45 bags of 80 lb mix before waste. Past that point, most people find hand-mixing bag after bag less practical than a ready-mix delivery — it’s time, water, and physical effort, not a code rule, so treat it as a planning threshold rather than a cutoff.

A 10×10×4-inch slab already sits near that edge once you add waste. Run the dimensions in the calculator first; if the bag count is climbing toward a full yard, get a short-load quote before you load a pallet into the truck.

The post-hole question we couldn’t answer with one source

If you’ve used the post-hole mode on the concrete calculator, you might have noticed the depth guidance is more conservative than what a lot of competing tools show. Here’s why, because it’s worth being upfront about.

Quikrete publishes two separate documents that touch on fence post depth. Their older Setting Posts project sheet gives a quick rule: hole depth should be about a third of the post’s overall length, plus 6 inches for gravel. Their dedicated Setting Posts in Concrete guide gives a fuller answer: a depth equal to somewhere between a third and a half of the post’s above-ground height, plus 6 inches for a gravel drainage layer.

Those aren’t necessarily in conflict — they may just be the same guidance at different levels of detail. But we weren’t willing to assume that and split the difference. Since getting this number wrong means a fence post that leans or heaves over a winter, not just a few dollars of extra concrete, the fence tool defaults to the deeper end of the range. The concrete calculator’s post-hole mode keeps depth user-entered on purpose: you apply the depth your site and local rules require. What actually changes your answer

One practical tip for the aisle: buy the bag size your mixer and your back can keep up with for the whole pour, not the size with the slightly better unit price on the shelf. An 80 lb bag that sits half-mixed while you rest is a worse deal than a 60 lb bag you can finish clean. And if the calculator is already showing a yard’s worth of bags, spend the next five minutes on a ready-mix quote before you commit to the pallet.
